Destin is where we are based, and it is where most of our week is spent. The pools here fall into two very different groups. Close to the water, in Crystal Beach and out on Holiday Isle, salt in the air and sand tracked in off the beach are constant. Sand settles into the floor and the corners and dulls the plaster if it is not vacuumed out, and the salt haze finds its way onto tile and equipment. Those pools also tend to be small, heavily used, and surrounded by decking that funnels everything straight into the water.

Move inland and the problem changes completely. Kelly Plantation, Regatta Bay and Indian Bayou sit under mature oak and pine, and shade plus organic debris is a harder combination for a pool than straight sun. Leaves and needles sink and stain, pollen coats the surface every spring, and filters in these neighborhoods load up two or three times faster than they do a mile south. We clean filters on these pools more often for exactly that reason, and we brush the shaded walls harder because that is where growth starts first.

Then there is the rental corridor along the Destin Harbor and Henderson Beach, where the pool has to be right on a specific day because a family is checking in that afternoon. We schedule that work around turnovers instead of around our own route. Being based in Destin is what makes it possible — most addresses in the city are ten or fifteen minutes from where our day starts, so a same-week request is usually a real answer rather than a polite maybe.
